Crickets, Gecko's and Coqui - Oh My! Workshop

- Check out the workshop resources

Creating a dynamic, fun, and relevant learning environment is the key to engaging Hawaii students in the STEM fields of GIS, biology, ecology, and computer science.

Join USGS, HIGICC and MEDB's Women In Technology (WIT) project for a fun educational workshop focused on the Hawaii Coqui Crawl project working to identify locations, model the distribution and perhaps general abundance of coqui frogs, house geckos and native crickets in Hawaii.

Students and the general public participating in the event will learn about

- Invasive Species
- Unique Hawaiian Native Species
- Gain a better understanding of the unique biogeography of the Hawaiian Islands (develop a sense of place).

Teachers and students will be introduced to a species count, use of technology to track the creatures, sound analysis, and create an awareness of Hawaii's amazing native and invasive species – located right here in our own backyards!

Hawaii's amazing Natural Resources & Invasive Species Committee, the Bishop Museum, Geospatial experts, and the Educational community will be partnering to provide an excellent opportunity for real world issues to be studied in the school classroom, and outside in our Hawaii outdoors classroom.

Presenters: Sam Droege (USGS), Derek Masaki (USGS), Isla Young (WIT) Email: sdroege@usgs.gov, dmasaki@usgs.gov, isla@medb.org Organization: USGS, HIGICC, MEDB's Women In Technology

NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK - February 21-26, 2011

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24

9:00 am to 1:45 pm

INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING DAY

A Call to ALL Maui Engineers!!
  • Less than 10% of American engineers are women
  • Only 5% of Hawaii engineers are women
  • Studies show that girls begin losing interest in math and science in middle school.

Deadline to Apply - January 24, 2011

With the limited resources on Maui, your support is greatly needed. Join others across the country for the 11th annual "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day" event on Thursday, February 24, 2011. Together, we can challenge those daunting statistics early on before students reach the high-school age.

The goal of the event is to expose girls to the field of engineering and to encourage them to become engineers themselves. Host engineers can be female or male. The event is free and open to all 7th & 8th grade girls. Lunch and refreshments will be provided for students and engineers.

As a host engineer volunteering just a half-day of job-shadowing, you can make a difference!
